Troubled Nation

by David Pekrul

This is a short poem I wrote some time ago, while watching the evening news.  It's not an elaborate poem, just a few of my thoughts, while feeling frustrated and angry about what I see around me.  At first reading you may think I am talking about the USA, but really I am talking about all nations, Canada, UK, Australia, the European community, all first-world, second-world, and third-world nations.   No one is exempt, although I do hear that Iceland has one of the lowest crime rates in the world.

Troubled Nation

Blood on the windows,
And blood on the chairs,
And blood on the carpet,
Does anyone care?

That everyday families,
Who live in our towns,
Are subjected to violence,
That goes 'round and 'round?

When fathers beat children,
And children lash out,
With street gangs and killings,
What's that all about?

And yet we do nothing,
There's nothing to do,
And though we know better,
We act like the fool,

Saying God bless our nation,
A song we all sing,
But when children are crying,
We don't do a thing.

I know I am ranting,
But feel so forlorn,
For our nation's been troubled,
Since the day it was born.

David Pekrul was born in New Westminster, B. C. Canada.

He wrote his first poem in February, 2004, as an Anniversary card for his wife, Linda. Being rather pleased by the results of his first attempt, he wrote a second one, then another and another. He soon realized that he was in love with words.

The pictures that his words paint may not always be pretty, but they are pictures worth viewing, for he writes about the world around him, whether they be things good, bad or otherwise. He also writes about family, nature, God and faith.

His first poetry book, "Parts Of The Sum Volume One" has just been published and can be found at http://www.blurb.com/bookstore/detail/3145051

David makes his home in the foothills of the Canadian Rockies with his wife Linda and spoiled pup, Tiki.

Thanks Raymond,

I just wish this wasn't a truth, but sadly it is.

A vivid piece, when will the world wake up? I second Mr Rock's comment. Capitalism is fine, to a point. When do we give back? When do we no longer turn a blind eye? When do people stop being selfish and become selfless? We need to make a start, in our own backyards.

A lot of good questions here, and I think you've answered them, "We need to make a start in our own backyards."

Thanks for reading, Teodora.

You're right about Bible prophesy. It is truly the word of God and it will come to pass as it says.

It is good to hear from a believer in another part of the world. We are one big family.

May God richly bless you,
