Whipping Boy

I know I said I'd do the jobs,
That no one else would do,
Because I thought you needed me,
But you don't have a clue.
I always get the dirty jobs,
While others get the praise,
And then you wonder why it is,
I ask you for a raise.

You treat me like a punching-bag,
You never seem to stop,
And though I give my everything,
The others reach the top.

Just one step forward, two steps back,
I never get ahead,
I'll work where no one knows of me,
Until the day I'm dead.

And then you'll wonder how it is,
You ever got along,
You'll think of how you treated me,
And realize you were wrong.

But will you learn your lesson then?
Or will you ever change?
You'll find another 'whipping boy',
And things will stay the same.

David Pekrul was born in New Westminster, B. C. Canada.

He wrote his first poem in February, 2004, as an Anniversary card for his wife, Linda. Being rather pleased by the results of his first attempt, he wrote a second one, then another and another. He soon realized that he was in love with words.

The pictures that his words paint may not always be pretty, but they are pictures worth viewing, for he writes about the world around him, whether they be things good, bad or otherwise. He also writes about family, nature, God and faith.

His first poetry book, "Parts Of The Sum Volume One" has just been published and can be found at http://www.blurb.com/bookstore/detail/3145051

David makes his home in the foothills of the Canadian Rockies with his wife Linda and spoiled pup, Tiki.

Great stuff!

I love this piece. It is a microcosm, a sunrise and sunset in one poem!

I believe there are a lot of "Whipping Boys and girls",  in the workplace. I hope your article will be read by employers who stop to take a look at the contributions of their employees and how they treat them. Well said David.

Thanks, Brianna.
It always seems to be the case of employers thinking that the company runs from their ivory towers and employees are just a nuisance. At least that's the way that it was in my old career. This new job is so different.  They seem to appreciate what I do.  What a nice change!

Great job, David and so true.  My husband is in a similar situation.  It is thankless, demoralizing, and degrading.  The truth is, the owner of the company will never change.  His greed and 'stupidity' never cease to amaze me.  The company works because of my husband and the other managers -- not because of the owner.

I find that many people who start companies may be good at making their product or selling their product, but have no idea how to run a company or treat employees.  It's time they realized that without good employees they have nothing.
Thanks for your comments.

David, another good article. I am siding with Nancy: "His greed and 'stupidity' never cease to amaze me." I love it.

Thanks for your comments.  It is because of companies who treat their employees badly, that the Union movement started.  But that is a discussion for another time.

Great article. Well done.

There is a term I have grown quite fond of to describe this type of work. It's a "triple D job" standing for dirty, dull and dangerous.

I'm sure there are a lot of "Triple D" jobs out there.  And when you ask for a raise your employer  will say, "Just be glad you have a job."

I wonder if poets, such as yourself, have any idea what a gift your talent is to the world? Wonderful!

Thank you so much, Anonymous.
I think that's the nicest comment I have ever received, and it is much appreciated.
Best Regards,
David
