Behind This Desk

by David Pekrul

I'm dreaming of another day,
But this one will not go away,
It hangs around and gives me pain,
And starts to drive me quite insane.
It starts so early, half past five,
I am awake, but not alive,
The sun is up, but in my eyes,
Though half asleep, I soon arise.

I make some coffee, read the news,
(I'd love to get a little snooze),
But daylight only lasts a day,
So I am up and on my way.

I grab a taxi, head for work,
(For I am just a payroll clerk),
I'm crunching numbers, what a blast,
I wish this day would go by fast.

I'm in a coma in this job,
I write the cheques and pay the mob,
But they are so upset with me,
It makes me want to up and flee.

They say that they should get a raise,
I try to calm them with some praise,
And tell them that they're doing fine,
But all they do is wimp and whine.

Another day, another dime,
The corporate ladder I would climb,
But I don't have the time or strength,
To run the race and go the length.

So I just sit behind this desk,
And try to look so statuesque,
And though a smile is on my face,
My mind is in another place.

David Pekrul was born in New Westminster, B. C. Canada.

He wrote his first poem in February, 2004, as an Anniversary card for his wife, Linda. Being rather pleased by the results of his first attempt, he wrote a second one, then another and another. He soon realized that he was in love with words.

The pictures that his words paint may not always be pretty, but they are pictures worth viewing, for he writes about the world around him, whether they be things good, bad or otherwise. He also writes about family, nature, God and faith.

His first poetry book, "Parts Of The Sum Volume One" has just been published and can be found at http://www.blurb.com/bookstore/detail/3145051

David makes his home in the foothills of the Canadian Rockies with his wife Linda and spoiled pup, Tiki.

Hi David.

This is a very relaxing poem. Thank you for sharing your thoughts. It is very amazing how a poem like this makes me think of just packing my things and retire in my hometown in the Philippines. I will be so content. LOL

Thanks again, as always, for a well written poem.

Best regards to you and yours.

Hey Nenita,
I know we would all like to retire some day. I tried it once; didn't work, now back to working full time. Maybe someday!

Happy Father's Day David.
Yes, I have thought of it a thousand times...retiring in the Philippines.  I have my house waiting there for me (I don't have to worry about mortgage and rent. LOL).
Some day, I will, God willing.
Enjoy your special day!
Best regards,
Nenita
