My Kingdom For A Beach

Posted: Sunday, May 31, 2009

by David Pekrul

It's that time of year when families pack up and head for the beach. For me that's hard to do, as I live in a province with very few lakes. The few lakes we do have are small and not really all that great for swimming or sunbathing. To travel to a great vacationing beach I must travel across the Rockies into British Columbia, which is full of wonderful lakes and beaches. (When I lived in British Columbia, I lived right beside a great lake and beach, with many more in the area.) This year I don't have the time to travel and spend time on the beach, so all I can do is write about the wonderful beaches I have visited in the past.

Beaches

There are no beaches where I live,
So, for a beach, I'd gladly give,
My thanks and praise for lovely things,
Like bathing beauties with no 'strings'.

I've been to beaches here and there,
Where some wear suits and some go bare,
Played volley-ball upon the sand,
And then relaxed with drink in hand.

I've been to beaches all around,
For there are none in my hometown,
I've been to Fiji and Key West,
But those in Cuba are the best.

I've seen Tahiti, Southern France,
In Mexico I learned to dance,
And on Hawaii's 'Black Sand Beach',
I've run around on my bare feet.

I've seen Bermuda's fine pink sand,
And Costa Rica's really grand,
There I can play around for days,
And snorkel Papagayo Bay.

The land 'Down Under' is a sight,
With pleasant beaches that are white,
And lovely maidens with no tops,
Who sun all day upon the rocks.

And though I love the place I dwell,
And think that it is really swell,
The beaches of the world still call,
Their beauty is the best of all.

David Pekrul was born in New Westminster, B. C. Canada.

He wrote his first poem in February, 2004, as an Anniversary card for his wife, Linda. Being rather pleased by the results of his first attempt, he wrote a second one, then another and another. He soon realized that he was in love with words.

The pictures that his words paint may not always be pretty, but they are pictures worth viewing, for he writes about the world around him, whether they be things good, bad or otherwise. He also writes about family, nature, God and faith.

His first poetry book, "Parts Of The Sum Volume One" has just been published and can be found at http://www.blurb.com/bookstore/detail/3145051

David makes his home in the foothills of the Canadian Rockies with his wife Linda and spoiled pup, Tiki.

Oh! the gift of memory coupled with imagination like a child. Remember, imagination can take you from where you are, to where you wish to be.

David, where do you wish to be? Then count it so.

Thanks for bringing my imagination back.

This poem is more memory than imagination. And I really want to be back on a beach.
Thanks for reading, much appreciated.

Thanks David,
I used to be a Travel Agent and I also spent 26 years with an airline, so travel is in my blood. I hope to go to the Mediterranean this year, Greece preferably. I haven't been to their beaches yet.

Hi David.

Thank you for this beautiful poem. This brings me back to my hometown where we used to go to the beach, walking distance from our house, bring and eat our lunch and then swim. ahhhhh.

Thanks for sharing this with your readers.

Best regards,

Thanks Nenita,
I used to live on a vacation resort that my parents owned. My wife and I had a double-wide mobile home on it. It was a lakefront property and we were only about 500 yards from the beach. I really miss that.

I actually live not too far from a beach, Padre Island. Haven't been there for years, but your poem is incredible!

Thanks Ken,
It's strange how we can live so close to something that everyone wants to see, yet hardly ever go there. I live one hour from Banff, Alberta, which is in the heart of the Canadian Rockies, but I have only been there maybe three or four times in the last eighteen years.

Thanks Jeff,
I know that this is not one of my best attempts, but then it was written about four years ago, just as I was starting to write.  I think I have learned a lot since then.

David,

The beach is indeed a wonderful Place. This year I've rented a beach hut, and it's the most wonderful place to go at weekends and after work. it is the very epitome of a heavenly experience.

This poem really does touch on my dearest place on earth next to home. Lovely, thanks for reminding us of the glory of the beach.
