Plain Speaking

Before I start this little article and poem, let me say that I truly appreciate all the wonderful comments I receive from my readers. Everyone is so gracious and most seen to like what I do (or at least pretend to). Now, I'm sure there are some who don't. I don't pretend to be a professional writer. I know I'm not. I just write what I feel and in the style of which I am comfortable.

Recently I received a welcomed and candid comment about my work and the words "cliche", "nothing unique or intriguing", "watered-down","misdirected", "lost" were all mentioned. Also something about trying something other than rhyme. (I happen to like rhyme).

Poetry is a personal taste and each poet (or me) writes in the way which makes him feel good. At least that's how I approach my writing. So, I submit to you the following short poem , "Plain Speaking", which is my opinion of the type of poetry I like to read and write.

Now, some poets speak what is not understood,
When they write about life; about death,
Of suffering and pain, it all seems the same,
But they talk like it's some kind of test.

They think fancy speech will show true emotion,
Of things that have need to be said,
They write lots of words and hope they have meaning,
Which leaves people scratching their heads.

"What's the meaning of this?", "What's the meaning of that?"
"It made little sense from the start",
Just reach deep inside and say what you mean,
Simple thoughts that come from your heart.

It's not a hard thing, just say what you feel,
And let the chips fall where they may,
Whether fancy or plain, the truth is the same,
If only you mean what you say.

David Pekrul was born in New Westminster, B. C. Canada.

He wrote his first poem in February, 2004, as an Anniversary card for his wife, Linda. Being rather pleased by the results of his first attempt, he wrote a second one, then another and another. He soon realized that he was in love with words.

The pictures that his words paint may not always be pretty, but they are pictures worth viewing, for he writes about the world around him, whether they be things good, bad or otherwise. He also writes about family, nature, God and faith.

His first poetry book, "Parts Of The Sum Volume One" has just been published and can be found at http://www.blurb.com/bookstore/detail/3145051

David makes his home in the foothills of the Canadian Rockies with his wife Linda and spoiled pup, Tiki.

Great poem. Well done.

I find some people comment without reading - or that’s the impression I get. Then write a totally abstract comment. I never rate an article less than three stars or write a purely negative comment.

Anyway, I enjoyed the poem like with all others. I find your work is varied and is certainly not a cliché.

A poem about poetry - what a novel idea.

Thanks so much, Connor.
I'm glad you're enjoying what you read. I know we can never please everyone, but then again, writers shouldn't even try to. Writing is a very personal thing, so what pleases us should be all that matters.

If you don't like write it don't write it and if you don't like to read it don't read it.

That is my rule.

Hi David.

A copy of "Plain Speaking" I printed,
Inside my bag it is folded
For I will again be reading
Your poem, I understand the meaning.

Like you, I write what I feel.
No fancy words can tell
What is in my heart I will say,
In my poem, I will express it my way.

LOL

Your avid fan,

David, I absolutely agree with you. True genuine, direct feelings verses contrived language. That does not mean that images can't be created in a genuine way. What do you think of my lyrical prose, "Riding on the crest of a wave?" Let me know. I have learnt so much from you and really appreciate your advice.

Again, this is another high quality poem and I have enjoyed reading your work.
