Big City Wilderness

Big city wilderness, what can compare?
Folks by the millions, in lone solitaire,
Looking, not seeing the traffic around,
Heading to work and then home they are bound.

No time for chatter or saying Good Day,
In a big hurry, they go their own way,
Whether by subway or taxi or bus,
"Nothing is perfect", they rant and they cuss.

Playing the markets and selling their stock,
Buying a house, now they own the whole block,
Everythings business, but nothing is sure,
Yet they keep working, not feeling secure.

No time for laughter or time for a friend,
Only this madness, now when will it end?
Thinking they're happy, but living a lie,
Why just depend on demand and supply?

Big city wilderness, choking on fumes,
Working so hard for the things they consume,
When all is done, there is nothing to keep,
Drowning in debt, and a debt that's so deep.

Stock market crashing and real estate gone,
Dark is the night; will they ever see dawn?
Lonely is life when youre stuck in a crowd,
Sorrow is quiet, but traffic is loud.

Darkness is coming and days are all used,
Feeling mistreated, betrayed and abused,
Big city wilderness, what do you care?
Everyone trapped in a strange love affair.

David Pekrul was born in New Westminster, B. C. Canada.

He wrote his first poem in February, 2004, as an Anniversary card for his wife, Linda. Being rather pleased by the results of his first attempt, he wrote a second one, then another and another. He soon realized that he was in love with words.

The pictures that his words paint may not always be pretty, but they are pictures worth viewing, for he writes about the world around him, whether they be things good, bad or otherwise. He also writes about family, nature, God and faith.

His first poetry book, "Parts Of The Sum Volume One" has just been published and can be found at http://www.blurb.com/bookstore/detail/3145051

David makes his home in the foothills of the Canadian Rockies with his wife Linda and spoiled pup, Tiki.

Wow David, powerful stuff here, the part that is so true, well it all is, but the one that stuck out for me was the stanza that said:

"Big city wilderness, choking on fumes,
Working so hard for the things they consume,
When all is done, there is nothing to keep,
Drowning in debt, and a debt that's so deep"

Big city wilderness, sounds like an oxy moron, but it really isn't in this context, how interesting this is, and so true. Great write, accurate content, and well said....I really liked this one.....Very well done......Your fan, and friend......Gary.

Thanks, Gary.
I'm a country boy, although I've worked in the big city. I live just south of Calgary, Alberta, but now I work in a small town just a little further south yet. I only go into the city when I absolutely have to.

I really enjoyed this poem. It brought back the memories of continual work, ever striving to achieve better and never having time for the important things in life. Boy am I ever grateful I woke up. Thank you for sharing.

Thanks Linda, I'm glad you enjoyed this one.
I've never been one for trying to get everything I could. I think I live a fairly simple life, but I know I'm happy.
