Rushing By

I watch the people rushing by,
And wonder where they're going,
A hectic way to spend one's life,
What life are they enjoying?

They're chasing after things to buy,
So they can get ahead,
The things that they must leave behind,
The moment they are dead.

I once was young, but now am old,
And sit upon a bench,
In front of Parker's General Store,
My hands relaxed or clenched.

I come here every afternoon,
And stay until it's dark,
And think of how life used to be,
As people rush and dart.

I sometimes think about a time,
When I was just a boy,
A time when life was simpler,
And I was full of joy.

And then I think about the day,
When I became a man,
And swore I'd work both day and night,
To get the things I can.

But that was many years ago,
My life has come full round,
I sit and watch the younger folk,
Who rush all over town.

I hope they start to understand,
Before it is too late,
That life is more than getting things,
For Heaven doesn't wait.

David Pekrul was born in New Westminster, B. C. Canada.

He wrote his first poem in February, 2004, as an Anniversary card for his wife, Linda. Being rather pleased by the results of his first attempt, he wrote a second one, then another and another. He soon realized that he was in love with words.

The pictures that his words paint may not always be pretty, but they are pictures worth viewing, for he writes about the world around him, whether they be things good, bad or otherwise. He also writes about family, nature, God and faith.

His first poetry book, "Parts Of The Sum Volume One" has just been published and can be found at http://www.blurb.com/bookstore/detail/3145051

David makes his home in the foothills of the Canadian Rockies with his wife Linda and spoiled pup, Tiki.

Another great poem David, Great story line, and rhythm. The cadence of the poem is one that you can almost march to!! It tells a great story and come to life as true lifes meaning. I always enjoy reading your work, and its messages. Well said, well done, and wonderfully written. I am never disappointed. I have finally gotten a chance to sit down for awhile and read again....been working tons of overtime for UPS, so sorry I haven't had a chance to read. My ratings are falling because of it...so I am atttempting to keep up during our busy time.....Well done my friend, find out anything on the possibilities of publishing yet? Your friend and fan.......Gary

Thanks, Gary, and I know what you mean about lots of work. Today is Saturday; supposed to be my day off, but I have to do a small graveside service today. I think I have been working almost every second Saturday. But I'm not complaining. In these economic times it is good to be employed. In fact when I was listening to the news about the recession, I thought to myself, "What recession?" My income has more than doubled since I retired from my airline career and I am more happy with my current type of work than my previous. I am now working on paying off my debts and by the end of this year, except for my mortgage, I hope to be debt-free. God truly has been good.
