Recession Poems or "What The Hell Do We Do Now?!!"

I wrote these two poems some time ago, but they somehow seem to fit in with the times in which we now live.

Death Of A Mining Town

Now, where have all the people gone,
As here I look around,
And see a lot of empty space,
Where once there was a town?
A town built by 'The Company',
A place to raise our kids,
But now the mine is shutting down,
And we are on the 'skids'.

A promise made, but never kept,
We trusted and obeyed,
They said that business would be good,
But then they never stayed.

And we are left with nothing more,
Than holes dug in the ground,
And that is where we ought to be,
For that is where we're bound.

A lousy place to raise our kids,
Then one day we'll be dead,
Our dreams were never meant to be,
Just fighting for our bread.

I hear a town is being built,
A hundred miles away,
A mine they're digging underground,
I wonder if they'll stay.

Corporate Downsizing

How does a business expect to survive,
When labour is sent out the door?
They keep all the offices full at the top,
But no one is working the floor.

They think that the money is made from up there,
And workers are here for the ride,
Now, when will they realize that we earn the dough?
They need us if they're to survive.

They lay off the workers and prices go up,
They think that they'll now make a profit,
But they do not realize if we're out of work,
There's no one to buy, so why stock it.

We're now unemployed and we're looking for jobs,
But they want to show us the door,
Now money is tight and we watch what we spend,
So who's gonna buy at their store?

Thanks for joining my fan club Gordon. It is nice to have a poet on board, who can give me some critiques on my writing. I'll probably not attain your calibre, but then again, I only started this journey five years ago.

Thanks for being here.
