Ant-Hill Bullies

by David Pekrul

I stood upon a hill of ants,
And thought that I was king,
I felt so very powerful,
Such terror I would bring.
I'd stomp those ants into the ground,
I'd show them who was boss,
I'd make them so afraid of me,
Not caring for their loss.

A child at just the age of five,
I thought that it was cool,
To lord it over weaker ones,
And make up my own rules.

But now I'm grown and look around,
At others doing the same,
And like the child of five years old,
They play the same old game.

They think that schoolyard bullying,
Is something that is cool,
To lord it over weaker ones,
And make up their own rules.

But though the ants were trodden on,
Most lived to see the day,
When one small boy of five years old,
Grew up and moved away.

Let's hope those schoolyard 'ant-hill kings',
Grow up and see the light,
For picking on the weaker ones,
Is never, ever right.

The time may come when they're the ones,
Downtrodden like the ants,
And wish the ones who bully them,
Will of their acts recant.

David Pekrul was born in New Westminster, B. C. Canada.

He wrote his first poem in February, 2004, as an Anniversary card for his wife, Linda. Being rather pleased by the results of his first attempt, he wrote a second one, then another and another. He soon realized that he was in love with words.

The pictures that his words paint may not always be pretty, but they are pictures worth viewing, for he writes about the world around him, whether they be things good, bad or otherwise. He also writes about family, nature, God and faith.

His first poetry book, "Parts Of The Sum Volume One" has just been published and can be found at http://www.blurb.com/bookstore/detail/3145051

David makes his home in the foothills of the Canadian Rockies with his wife Linda and spoiled pup, Tiki.

Thanks Teresa,
There has always been some sort of bullying in schoolyards, but I find that what goes on today is more violent than before and really scary.
Maybe someone who picks on other will read this poem and get the message.

Hi Ken,
I was never a bully in school (not big and tough enough) but I always had an uncanny way of making friends with the bullies. This was totally out of self-preservation, so that they would leave me alone.
