The Guardian

Hiding in the shadows,
The Guardian stays alert,
It watches every move we make,
Disaster to advert.

It watches all the things we do,
And listens when we say,
"I'll make the rules that suit me best,
And do it my own way."

And then when we get out of line,
The Guardian rears its head,
Attacking with such cruelty,
Before we are mislead.

A sword it pierces deep within,
And there it stings and bites,
And brings us to submissiveness,
Although we try to fight.

The Guardian is our Conscience,
That speaks when we do wrong,
It sends a message to our soul,
And tries to keep us strong.

But some have killed their Guardian,
Their Conscience they have seared,
They wander helplessly through life,
Their way becomes unclear.

Be thankful for your Guardian,
It wants the best for you,
For when it seems you've lost your way,
It always sees you through.

David Pekrul was born in New Westminster, B. C. Canada.

He wrote his first poem in February, 2004, as an Anniversary card for his wife, Linda. Being rather pleased by the results of his first attempt, he wrote a second one, then another and another. He soon realized that he was in love with words.

The pictures that his words paint may not always be pretty, but they are pictures worth viewing, for he writes about the world around him, whether they be things good, bad or otherwise. He also writes about family, nature, God and faith.

His first poetry book, "Parts Of The Sum Volume One" has just been published and can be found at http://www.blurb.com/bookstore/detail/3145051

David makes his home in the foothills of the Canadian Rockies with his wife Linda and spoiled pup, Tiki.

Thanks for giving me a reason to like poetry! Usually not my favorite thing to read, your writing, the meter, topics and all you pour into your poems guarantee that I will click on your name to see what new insights you are sharing with us.

Thanks so much, Lorrie, I really do appreciate that you are enjoying the reading. As you can see, I've submitted a lot of poetry here. I'd encourage you to check out some of the oldest poetry I've submitted. Back then I didn't have a lot of readers and a lot of my older works didn't get many hits. I'm hoping people will start checking them out as well.
Again, thank you for taking the time to read and comment.

The rhyming in the poem is brilliant.

I wish more poems nowadays had such rhyming skill.

Thanks Mr. Home.
I love rhyming and for me it is easier to rhyme a poem than write free-verse. Like I told Lorrie in an earlier post, I'm hoping people will start checking out some of my older posts as well as my new ones. I have enough poetry on this site now to keep you reading for some time. And I do appreciate you reading and commenting.

Dear Mr. Pekrul,

Thanks for writing this poem. You described it beautifully the connection between one's soul and conscience. However, this world is complex and people are complex and people get into complex situations where it is hard to defined right and wrong and black and white. There is only gray.

Best wishes,

Sher Ahmed Mubjo

Thank you so much for your comment and for reading my poem.
I know this is a very complex world we live in and sometimes it is hard to see the difference between what is right and what is not so right. I do believe, however, if one really looks on the inside and searches their soul, they will know what is right.
I know that sounds like a simple answer, but I believe that sometimes we make things more difficult than they really are.
Again, thanks for reading and for commenting. It is much appreciated.

Another great poem. I know I have a guardian, although sometimes I think he probably gets a little beat up watching over me.

Thanks Linda.
We all have a guardian. I think that for us believers, His name is the Holy Spirit.
