Some Poems About Food

I Love Pie

The Yankees love their Apple Pie,
The Brits, their Custard Pie,
My wife told me she can't make pie,
She knows, for she has tried.

The Dutch have Apple Berry Pie,
The Scottish, Mincemeat Pie,
Italians have Ricotta Pie,
And I have none, "Oh, Why?"

I love that little flaky crust,
That goes with morning tea,
It seems that all the world has some,
But there is none for me.

The Finnish have Karjalan Pie,
Whatever that may be,
The Greeks have Cheese And Spinach Pie,
I'd love a piece with Brie.

So, as the world enjoys their pie,
I eat a simple tart,
For even though I love my pie,
We live a world apart.

Veggies

We're told to eat our vegetables,
Before we have dessert,
Well, that's okay for others, but
For me it doesn't work.

I really love my sugar,
It's the best thing on my plate,
But I'll still eat my vegetables,
From them I can't escape.

I really hate those vegetables,
I'll save them 'til the last,
Then swallow them with water, so
I get them down real fast.

I Want To Eat A Pork Chop

I want to eat a pork chop and love to eat a steak,
But people try to change my mind and say it's a mistake,
To eat a living creature; they say that it's a sin,
But I would challenge their beliefs; now where do I begin?

To try to live on lettuce would leave me feeling weak,
To have a little protein, is what I really seek,
A little calamari, a little shrimp and prawn,
Without those things I may as well just graze upon the lawn.

Now, you may like your veggies, and think they're really fine,
But I would rather have a steak, and with some red, red wine,
I also love my veggies, but have them on the side,
For when it comes to getting fed, my meat is baked or fried.

Don't criticize my eating; it's not the job for you,
For even in the Holy Book, it tells me what to do,
"Let others not condemn you for what you eat or drink",
And that is what I plan to do, no matter what you think.

"So don't let anyone condemn you for what you eat or drink"
Colossians 2:16a

David Pekrul was born in New Westminster, B. C. Canada.

He wrote his first poem in February, 2004, as an Anniversary card for his wife, Linda. Being rather pleased by the results of his first attempt, he wrote a second one, then another and another. He soon realized that he was in love with words.

The pictures that his words paint may not always be pretty, but they are pictures worth viewing, for he writes about the world around him, whether they be things good, bad or otherwise. He also writes about family, nature, God and faith.

His first poetry book, "Parts Of The Sum Volume One" has just been published and can be found at http://www.blurb.com/bookstore/detail/3145051

David makes his home in the foothills of the Canadian Rockies with his wife Linda and spoiled pup, Tiki.

Great poem, David. I, too, love pie, steak and all good things that keep me fat and jolly!

As a former poet I cna appreciate the excellent skills you have to express anything without offending. Be it presenting humor, mediatation or a serious topic you have a way to say it. Good job..

Thanks, Ken.
My poetry writing only started five years ago, so I have a lot to learn. It sure is fun, though.
I'm glad you enjoy them. I hope you read lots more, and thanks.

David, your poems are a treat. You know, the kind of treat you used to expect at the end of suppertime when you were a kid. The one that would make your mouth water. Of course I am speaking of that wonderful hot apple pie, or strawberry shortbread....that is the way your poems are. The are the desert of your writing. The imagination that goes into poetry is harder than one thinks, and you make it look simple....Where's the book? I can see the title now, David Pekrul's "Lifes Little Hiccups".....hummmmmm not bad. Love your poetry, I'm on my way to read another!!! Your pal, and friend and fan in pen,........Gary

Hey, Gary, I like the title. I'm going to start checking out what publishers there are out there and put together a sample of poems to send. I want to use a regular publisher, not one that charges for their services. I'll probably get a lot of rejection letters, but hey, if I don't try, I'll never know. Thanks for all your encouragement.

Thank Teresa.
We each have our thing and I know I could never write and explain scripture as well as you. So, God gives each their own special gift and all He asks is that we use it.
Thanks for your kind comments and for continuing to read my stuff.

yeah, yeah, whatever. :-)  I know you are right, thanks for keeping it all in perspective for me. Still, no harm in wishing I could write poetry :-)
