Pinocchio And Jonah

Posted: Sunday, March 15, 2009

by David Pekrul

Pinocchio and Jonah met in the Square,
They both were complaining, "It just isnt fair,
That both our Creators would show little justice,
By treating us both like two little puppets."

For God had a job for Jonah to do,
But he wouldn't do it and said he was through,
Having strings being pulled both this way and that,
So he jumped on a ship like a spoiled little brat.

Pinocchio wanted to be a small boy,
But Geppetto was pulling his strings like a toy,
Instead of obeying, he tried to rebel,
But his nose started growing and people could tell.

They both ended up in the guts of a whale,
And all they could do was tread water and bail,
And think how they struggled when God tried to teach,
Until they were finally tossed onto a beach.

Let's listen real well as we hear this sad tale,
Of Pinocchio, Jonah and Mostro the whale,
And learn a great lesson, to do as we should,
Whether we are a person or made out of wood.

David Pekrul was born in New Westminster, B. C. Canada.

He wrote his first poem in February, 2004, as an Anniversary card for his wife, Linda. Being rather pleased by the results of his first attempt, he wrote a second one, then another and another. He soon realized that he was in love with words.

The pictures that his words paint may not always be pretty, but they are pictures worth viewing, for he writes about the world around him, whether they be things good, bad or otherwise. He also writes about family, nature, God and faith.

His first poetry book, "Parts Of The Sum Volume One" has just been published and can be found at http://www.blurb.com/bookstore/detail/3145051

David makes his home in the foothills of the Canadian Rockies with his wife Linda and spoiled pup, Tiki.

Thanks so much, Gary. I look so forward to your comments. I'm not sure how I come up with these poems. I think maybe my mind is a scary place to be. lol
As far as publishing, I have made enquiries with BookSurge, which is a division of Amazon. They sent me a PDF file to read, but I haven't had time to look at it yet, but I will. Thanks for your encouragement and the kicks in the pants to do something with my writing. I'll let you know how it all works out.

Thanks Teresa,
Writing poetry has been an amazing adventure for me. I used to occasionally preach over the pulpit. I used to play trumpet solos in churches. I guess poetry is what God wants for me now.

Thanks Ken.
But actually the Bible says that Jonah was swallowed by a big fish, but then maybe it was written that way for the common people of that time, who did not really understand that a whale was a mammal and a completely different species from a fish. Or maybe it was a fish and not a whale.
Whatever, I'll stick with the whale story, or should I say, 'whale of a story'.

Thanks Jane.
I've always thought it was neat that both these stories were similar in that they both included the hero of the story being swallowed by a whale, or in Jonah's case, a big fish.
Glad you liked the poem.
