My Father (A Tribute)

by David Pekrul

He was always there,
and often I took him for granted.
He gave us a roof over our heads,
and a vegetable garden the size of a swimming pool.
He never asked for much in return,
except on Saturday's
when I was expected to help him around the yard.
I hated it.....
He always said that I was the only one
who would stay with him for the whole day
while he worked in the yard.......but I hated it.
When he said I was "asking for a spanking",
he was right.
I deserved it every time,
and it did me good.
I know now what he meant
when he said "This will hurt me more than it hurts you."
Even when I was being punished,
I could feel his love.

He's gone now and I miss him terribly.
If I could just spend a Saturday
helping him in the yard,
I know I wouldn't hate it so much.

David Pekrul was born in New Westminster, B. C. Canada.

He wrote his first poem in February, 2004, as an Anniversary card for his wife, Linda. Being rather pleased by the results of his first attempt, he wrote a second one, then another and another. He soon realized that he was in love with words.

The pictures that his words paint may not always be pretty, but they are pictures worth viewing, for he writes about the world around him, whether they be things good, bad or otherwise. He also writes about family, nature, God and faith.

His first poetry book, "Parts Of The Sum Volume One" has just been published and can be found at http://www.blurb.com/bookstore/detail/3145051

David makes his home in the foothills of the Canadian Rockies with his wife Linda and spoiled pup, Tiki.

Wow David, you and I have written about the same things, I love your poetic stories and the stories that you tell through them.....you are a gem....I lost my father as well, and I would love just one more day with him, and my mother...my dad went down in a airplane, he owned three of them, and he was a pilot. They didn't find him for 11 years, Those were tough times for me, I was just in high school. It was hard to bear the pain that he was out there somewhere...maybe alive, but wounded, needed someone?? we just never knew...I miss him dearly.....I think I will write about the incident. Perhaps folks will know how lucky they are to still have their fathers....I loved this poem...great write, full of passion....Good read....your fan and friend in pen, Gary.

Gary, I'd love to read your story. It must have been a very trying time. It would be good to get it on paper. My dad suffered from a very rare disease called "Progressive Supranuclear Palsy. The actor Dudley Moore had the same disease and there was a documentary on TV about him. It was hard to see this man, who was so strong and vibrant, being held captive in his own body, unable to walk or talk. His mind was sharp to the end, but he was unable to communicate. It must have been hell for him.
Again, thanks for reading my stuff and for your encouragement.
