Just Twenty-Five

I was inspired to write this 'drinking and driving' poem after I was sent to pick up a young girl who had died in a car accident on a mountain highway. I never did find out the cause of the accident, and I really don't know if alcohol was involved, but nevertheless the thoughts in my mind at the time produced this poem.
Just twenty-five, so young and free,
But such a tragic end,
While driving down a mountain road,
She came upon a bend.
The corner came, she tried to turn,
But drove right off the side,
She's trapped inside her brand new car,
The end of her first ride.
Was late at night, while on the town,
She had too much to drink,
They told her she should take a cab,
Whatever did they think?
"I'm twenty-five, an adult now,
I'll make up my own mind,
They try to tell me what to do,
I'll leave them all behind."
"I'm twenty-five; is this the end?
I'm hurting and I'm scared,
I wish that I had listened, but
I never knew they cared."
A mountain road, too much to drink,
A tale so hard to hear,
But when you're only twenty-five,
You have so little fear.
"I'm drifting off; I'm feeling light,
I think my life has passed,
I'm heading for another world;
I hope this one will last."
